Journey Enterprises Ltd

Journey Enterprises is a local charity which was founded by parents of young people with learning disability and complex needs 30 years ago.  Launched in Northumberland we now operate across the north east region.

The Charity provides life-skills and employability training, and respite opportunities for young people and adults with intellectual disability.  We also run social enterprises including community kitchens, allotments, a bakery and a station kiosk-cafe.  Clients play a key part in the success of social enterprises by using the experience as a stepping stone to employment.

The conditions the Charity supports include Down's Syndrome, Cerebal Palsay, Williams Syndrome, Fragile X and Sotos and our clients range in age from 16 to 75 years.

Journey believes passionately in enhancing the quality of life and giving people with complex disability opportunities to lead happier and socially-inclusive lives in their home communities.  Our services are developed on a person-centred approach, designed to meet each individual's life ambitions and dreams.  We work within each person's circles of support, recongising the expertise and knowledge of the individiual and of unpaid/family carers.

The Charity accepts referrals from across the North East and has three operation centres.  These are:

  • Ascomb, Hexham
  • Coundon, Durham
  • Wallsend, North Tyneside

Journey's centres offer an array of activities, independent living programming and employability training both on site and across the region.  Our independent living programme is delivered by Life Skilsl Coaches and is tailored to meet you needs and includes:

  • healthy living
  • cooking
  • shopping
  • managing money
  • keeping fit
  • relationships
  • using local services

Our employabilit programme is led by Job Coaches who work on a 1:1 basis and in small groups with people who would like to volunteer or enter paid work.  Many of our clients practice job skills in our own social enterprises but also enjoy work experience in partner organisations locally.

The Job Coaches work with local employers, the Department for Work and Pensions, Access to Work and with local Job Centres to enable Journey clients to progress in to work.  We will guide and support you and your employer to make sure that your new job is a success.

Our staff teams are highly skilled and dedicated to helping you, your family and carers turn your ideas and dreams in to reality.

We provide transport to our centres by minibus for those who are unable to access our centres independently.  A free taster day can be arranged for you to come along, meet us and see what we offer.
